The Lucky Few Podcast

Not long ago, I was introduced to The Lucky Few Podcast through one of the Down Syndrome groups I am in. They just finished season 2. I found it really interesting and wanted to share my review with you.

The Lucky Few hosts are a group of 3 moms who each have a child (or two) with Down syndrome. Heather and Mercedes adopted their children with Down syndrome and Micha gave birth to her child. One thing I noticed through their episodes that the emotions that come with raising a child with Down syndrome does not change much between how that child came into your family. There is still “Am I doing everything I can for my child?”, “Am I neglecting my other children?”, “What does the future hold for them? For us?”, “Am I able to do this?”, etc. It’s comforting to know that these self-questions are common.
The children’s ages range from preschool to 10 years old. With Mary being only a year old, I am enjoying listening to their experiences and what I have to look forward to in our future.
They have also broached MANY relate-able topics from therapies to inclusion to discipline to emotions and many more. They have talked to experts on the issues as well as fellow families who are learning as they go, just like us. There are some episodes that can get really heavy emotionally and I tend to listen to those episodes in small chunks over a few days.
One episode they did in season 2 that really stood out to me was when the talked with Terry Brown. She works with children with special needs, helping to teach them skills like reading and writing. We have been struggling with this with Alex for a while. We are trying, but it can be frustrating. On the show, one of the moms started to tear up because she was worried that it was too late for her daughter because they struggle and her daughter shuts down when it gets difficult. I admit, I was crying too for a similar reason. But Terry Brown kept saying “It’s never too late” and that stuck with me. I took a deep breath and told myself “It’s not too late. We can do this.” And we’ve continued to work on it using the suggestions from that episode.
I am very glad to have found this podcast and highly recommend it.
